Benzoin (kemenyan) is an aromatic resin obtained by tapping trees from the genus Styrax. In North Sumatra, several species are widely recognized, including Toba Benzoin (Styrax sumatrana), Bulu Benzoin (Styrax paralleloneurus), and Durame Benzoin (Styrax benzoin). Once dried and sorted, the resin releases a balsamic, sweet, warm, woody, and smoky character when burned or heated.
